Hurghada airport transfers

HRG to your hotel · 15–60 min depending on the zone · driver with a name sign, free waiting on most private transfers

Hurghada International Airport (HRG) sits just south of the town centre, so most Hurghada hotels are 15–35 minutes away by car, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna about half an hour or a little more, Makadi around 40 minutes and Soma Bay up to an hour. A pre-booked private transfer is the least stress after a night flight: the driver waits with your name, tracks the flight and takes you straight to the hotel. Shared shuttles cost less but stop at several hotels; taxis and Uber work if you're happy to deal with it on arrival.

Drive times from HRG by hotel zone

Zone Typical drive by private car Notes
Hurghada town (El Dahar, Sakkala, Sheraton Road, El Kawther, Village Road) ≈ 15–35 min Closest; traffic in town adds the extra minutes
Sahl Hasheesh ≈ 25–40 min South along the coast road
El Gouna ≈ 25–40 min North, past the whole length of Hurghada
Makadi Bay ≈ 40 min South; several resorts are off the main road
Soma Bay ≈ 45–60 min Furthest of the usual zones

These are the times transfer operators publish for a private car. A shared shuttle that drops at six hotels can double them, and the last hotel on the list is the one that waits longest.

How the meet and greet works at HRG

After passport control (with the visa on arrival bought first, if you need one) and baggage claim, you walk out of the arrivals hall. Private transfer drivers stand outside the exit with a board showing your name; some operators add the booking platform's logo. You'll have the driver's details and a WhatsApp contact before your flight.

What makes it smooth:

  • Give your flight number at booking. Operators use it to track delays. Several include up to 90 minutes of free waiting from landing.
  • Keep WhatsApp working. Drivers message on arrival; a phone in airplane mode until you reach the hotel means a driver who can't find you.
  • Luggage: some operators accept any luggage that fits the car. Golf bags, kitesurf kit and pushchairs may need a bigger vehicle, so mention them.
  • Child seats: if you need one, ask the operator in writing before you book. Don't assume there will be one in the car.

Going back to the airport

For the return, operators send the pickup time the evening before, often at about 22:00. One large transfer company asks guests to wait at the hotel's main entrance by the road, not in the lobby, and only waits about five minutes, so be there early. From Soma Bay or El Gouna, allow for the full hour plus airport security when your airline tells you when to arrive.

Package guests and everyone else

If you booked a package with a tour operator, a coach transfer is normally part of it and your rep meets you after arrivals. If you booked flights and hotel separately, nothing is arranged unless you book it; you can also ask your hotel whether it arranges airport cars and compare its price with the listings below. Either way, have your hotel's name, area and phone number written down or saved offline: Hurghada hotels with similar names in different zones are a classic way to lose half an hour.

Taxis at the airport

Taxis wait outside arrivals. They work well for a short ride into Hurghada town if you agree the fare first, in a specific currency, before your bags go in the boot. If a driver tells you Uber doesn't work at the airport, check the app: Uber states it operates at HRG around the clock.

Questions people ask

How long is the transfer from Hurghada airport to the hotel?
About 15–35 minutes to Hurghada town hotels, around 25–40 minutes to Sahl Hasheesh or El Gouna, about 40 minutes to Makadi Bay and 45–60 minutes to Soma Bay, by private car. Shared shuttles take longer because of the stops.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Private transfer operators ask for your flight number and track it. Several listings include up to 90 minutes of free waiting after landing and say the driver will wait longer for slow immigration or lost luggage.
Is Uber available at Hurghada airport?
Yes. Uber's own airport page for HRG says it runs 24/7 at Hurghada airport and shows the pickup point in the app; drivers may take longer for very early or late flights.
Where do I meet my transfer driver?
Outside the arrivals exit after passport control and baggage claim, holding a sign with your name. The exact spot and the driver's details are sent by WhatsApp or email before you fly.
Do I need to tip the transfer driver?
Tips are not included in transfer prices. A small tip for help with bags is normal.
When is the pickup for my return transfer?
The operator confirms it the evening before, often at around 22:00 by WhatsApp or email. Be at your hotel's main entrance on the road side, not at reception, a few minutes early.
