Flying
EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Nile Air and Nesma Airlines all fly Hurghada–Cairo nonstop, with several departures a day between them. The flight is about an hour. Book on the airline's site or a flight-comparison site. The fares can be close to the price of a private car for one person, and well below it if you book early. You need your passport, even on a domestic flight.
The catch is where you land. Cairo International is in Heliopolis, on the eastern side of the city. If your hotel is near the pyramids or the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, that is about 40 km across Cairo, often more than an hour in traffic. If you are flying home from Cairo, the airport is the right place to land, and you can connect the same day with enough margin.
Go Bus and Blue Bus
Go Bus runs scheduled coaches between Hurghada and Cairo in several classes, with timetable times around seven hours. Several departures leave in the middle of the night, for example after 01:00 or around 03:30, and arrive in Cairo in the morning. Blue Bus also serves the route, leaving from El Nasr Street in Hurghada. Buses leave from company terminals, not hotels, so add a taxi at each end, and check the departure address on your ticket against the company's own office. Traveller reports on reseller sites mention wrong addresses and changed times.
The bus suits travellers on a budget who can sleep on a coach. It is not the right choice if you have a flight to catch from Cairo the same morning.
Driving with a private transfer
A private transfer takes about five to six hours and goes from door to door. You can stop for coffee in Zafarana or at Ain Sokhna. It is the easiest choice with children, large suitcases or a hotel in Giza, because you avoid the airport-to-Giza drive. Prices on the platforms are shown per person, so check whether you are paying per car or per head. Pickups outside central Hurghada (Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay) usually cost extra.
Cairo to Hurghada: the same three options
Coming the other way works the same, with one difference: if you land at Cairo International after a long-haul flight, a connecting flight to Hurghada is usually easier than a night bus or six hours in a car. Hurghada airport is about 15 minutes from the town hotels, but further from Makadi, Soma Bay and El Gouna. Buses arrive at company terminals in Hurghada town, so you still need a taxi to a hotel in a resort zone. A private car from Cairo can drop you at the hotel door wherever you stay.
Going to Cairo just for the pyramids
If you are staying in Hurghada and only want the pyramids, you don't need a one-way ticket at all. Cairo day trips from Hurghada cover the transport, the guide and the plateau, by road or by plane. If you have more time, take a one-way flight, spend two nights in Giza, and fly or drive back. You will see far more than any 20-hour day allows.
